Life of Sidney Rigdon

Written by Nathan Franson

INTRODUCTION

It is ironic that one of the most active participants in the American restoration movement also happened to be one of the most active participants in the forming of such a successful cult. In fact, if one were to ask someone in the religious world what they know of Sidney Rigdon, they likely would be able to relate much information regarding his connection to the Mormon church. However, he was much more than that, having a significant role in restoration movement in America. His life is an interesting case study, as we are able to see the transition from his early life of preaching, to becoming one of Alexander Campbell’s most reliable allies regarding the restoration, to Joseph Smith’s most reliable ally in helping to orchestrate the establishment of the Mormon religion.
